Eyelash extensions have become one of the fastest growing beauty treatments worldwide. With the ability to completely change the look of your eye, eyelash extensions allow us to create a look usually only achievable with a good mascara. With the added benefit of choosing a natural or glamorous look, clients can now easily achieve a longer, thicker and fuller looking lash.

Tell your client to close their eyes and keep them shut throughout the whole procedure.

Use a mascara brush to brush client’s eyelashes. Mascara brushes will help separate natural eyelashes from stickiness after using primer. Lashes are easier to see when they are separated one from another.

Use curved tweezers to separate an individual lash from the other eyelashes. Use straight tweezers to pick up individual extensions, dip it in the adhesive, wipe extra adhesive, if necessary, and apply to 1 eyelash only.

Lash cycle is approximately 90 days. We try to apply extension onto every lash but be careful, as MEDIUM length lashes are perfect for the extensions and will last longer than if we were to put them on the LONGEST (older) lash.

LONGEST (older) lashes will fall off sooner leaving gaps.  BABY lashes are not strong enough to hold heavy eyelash extension. Use very thin extensions with short natural lashes. When applying extensions, wait for 4-5 seconds and then release the lash. Never apply eyelash extensions to the skin you could create a painful stye. Always apply 0.05mm- 1mm away from the skin.

Eyelash extensions will not damage your natural eyelashes if they are treated and cared for properly.

When it comes to the eyelash extensions the correct way to remove them is very important to make sure we do not do any damage to the natural eyelash, never pull or pick your eyelash extensions off, this could mean that you could pull your natural lashes out with it, always use the correct method for removal.

We can use tweezers to remove one lash at the time if we are correcting or doing in-fills for client, or we can use an eyelash extension remover (if we need to remove the whole set)

To use remover we will need:

Micro brushes

Eyelash extension remover (gel, liquid or cream)

Cotton pads

Water

Apply remover onto micro brushes and slowly apply it to the eyelash extensions. Brush upwards to break down the adhesive.

Do not apply remover directly to the lash or the skin. Always use micro brushes to avoid contact with eyes.

Use cotton pads and water to get rid of any extra remover on the lashes.

Silk lash: 1/3 of the lash is tapered and is slightly heavier than the faux mink lash but still very comfortable for the client. Silk lash have a glossy look. It will give you more darker look than the mink lashes

Mink (faux) lash: 2/3 of the lash is tapered and is lighter than the silk lash. It will give you more natural look and is similar to the natural lash. Mink lash have semi matte finish and is light weight.

Real mink lash: is NOT used very often in the lash industry anymore. These lashes are from the tail of the mink (animal). They are not accurate in length and they also loose their curl. They are very expensive. We would not recommend to use them.

Eyelash extensions are great for those who are wanting fuller more defined lashes. Most people will be suitable for eyelash extensions but you must always carry out a patch test to see if they have any allergies to any of the products first and always check for contra-indications.

There are a number of contra-indications that will prevent you from carrying out a set of eyelash extensions such as eye infections, eczema, recent eye surgery, a recent eyelash lift/perm treatment or your client has extremely weak/brittle lashes.

Always do a thorough consultation to pin point any issues that may prevent the treatment from going ahead.

Patch testing is very important and is essential for every new client. This must be carried out at least 48 hours before you start any treatment.

Apply 2-5 short thin lashes in the outer corners on both eyes. (Some adhesive can be dabbed with the micro brush behind the ear as a patch test – check with manufacturers)

As we go through hormonal changes throughout our lives our bodies sensitivity can change, so it is always better to patch test your client again after big life changes such as during pregnancy, after giving birth or if you have changed lash adhesive…

Some insurance companies will require you to patch test EVERY YEAR!!!

And why do we have to do that?

By conducting a patch test you are protecting both your client (safety wise) and yourself.

The patch test is designed to ensure that your client is not allergic to eyelash extension adhesive vapors / fumes.

Although it is unlikely that your client will experience an allergic reaction, it is always better to check. The client’s wellbeing should always be your highest priority.

Some clients might be allergic on the other products you are using e.g gel pads, micropore tape, primer etc

By patch testing you will find out if it is safe to preform the treatment for the scheduled appointment.

It is important that you always check with your insurance provider that you are covered by them to do lashes on pregnant ladies before you do anything.

If your insurance provider does cover you for pregnant clients, it is advised that you do not apply lashes within the first 3 months.

After 3 months is safer to do so, also make sure that your client is not lying down flat for too long, try and sit your client more upright when applying lashes.

It is worth noting that pregnancy can make your client need the toilet more frequently. So maybe after 7 months it may be trickier to apply the lashes as they can’t lay still for as long, advise this to your clients too. You can’t do a treatment where they need to have their eyes closed for a long time if they need to get up and down to use the bathroom. They can’t keep opening eyes during a lash treatment.

Pregnancy causes hormonal changes which can effect the longevity of lashes, make sure your client is aware of this and explain that they may not last as long or they may need infills more often than they normally do.

Always make sure that you carry out a patch test prior to any treatment.

THICKNESS

This is the width of each individual extension at the base. Thickness is in millimetres (0.03mm-0.20mm)

0.03mm – 0.07mm is for Russian volume/ volume lashes

0.10mm – 0.15mm is for natural look

0.18mm – 0.20mm ( flat lash only in 0.20mm) is thicker/ glamorous look (only for strong natural lashes)

0.25 is too heavy for your natural eyelashes

Average eyelash is 0.10mm thick

LENGTH

The length of each individual eyelash extension in millimetres. They are measured in the factory and cut them into the desired length. Then they are curled. (4mm-15mm)

Use only 2mm-3mm longer eyelash extension than the natural lash to avoid damaging the natural lash.

4mm – 9mm inner corner of the eye

9mm – 12mm middle of the eye

12mm – 15mm outer corner of the eye for glam look (longer length is used only for naurally long lashes) or 7mm – 9mm outer corner of the eye for natural look

As our lashes are naturally shorter in the inner corner, longest in the middle and then shorter again in the outer corner. Some people would like longer on their outer corners to create this sweep (also known as the cat eye style)

CURL

This is the defined curl in the lash extension after they curl them in the factory. There are many more different curls but these are the most used. (J, B, C, D) also quite popular are L, L+, M

J – Should be used on the straight lashes. Gently curl towards the end of the extension to mimic natural lashes.

B – This is to use for straight lashes or in the inner corners, but curl is curlier then on a J curl

C – This is to use for naturally curled eyelashes. It is the most used curl. It has defined curl and will create that lifted look to the eyes for your client.

D – Curl are the curliest on the market they will give a very glamorous, lifted look to the eyes.

We would recommend to buy C curl 0.15mm mixed length tray for your practice

Pre made lashes are normally made by a machine and are already made into a fan, ready to use and held together with adhesive at the bottom to save the lash artist from making each fan.

Pro made lashes are made by your lash artist during your visit, they will make each individual fan with the desired amount, length and thickness of lashes to create the look that you require. They are also held at the root by adhesive.

Eyelash extensions are very precious. For them to last longer you have to explain the aftercare procedure to your clients.

Do not get lash extensions wet in the next 24 hours

Do not use steamed rooms, bath, sunbeds in the next 24 hours

Use non oily products to remove make up as oily products will break down the glue

Do not use mascara

Do not pick as you can damage your natural eyelashes

Do not use lash curlers, it will break the glue and lashes

When you wash your face make sure you dab dry and not rub

You can use a sealer to secure lashes

Full individual lashes are brushable but be gentle

It is always best to remove your contact lenses before having eyelash extensions applied. This is incase of any irritation that may occur during the process. Once your lashes have been applied it is normally safe to put contact lenses back in but remember that the lashes can not get wet for 24 hours after application.

To become a lash artist you will need to gain your qualification first. You will need to attend a training course or online course to achieve your qualification in lash extensions. This requires training and practice to perfect your technique. Once you have completed your course to the required standard you will receive your certificate, you can then purchase the correct insurance that covers your qualification for you to carry out your lash extensions on paying clients.

Russian volume lashes are fantastic for clients wanting to achieve a really full set of volume lashes. The synthetic lashes are created into a fan and each fan is then applied to the individual natural lash to create lovely full volume.
